# Proton Pump Inhibitors
---
**Proton pump inhibitors** are a class of [[medicine]] that reduce the production of [[stomach acid]] by inhibiting the proton pumps that produce it. They're used to treat conditions such as [[peptic ulcer disease|peptic ulcers]] or [[GERD]].
## Mechanism of Action
Binds to enzyme that prevents transports of hydrogen ions into gastric lumen, blocking the production of [[stomach acid|HCl]].
## Adverse Reactions
These meds are usually tolerated well, but there is some risk for [[healthcare associated infection|C. diff]] (i.e. diahrrea) from a loss of good gut bacteria. Can also interfere with [[magnesium]] absorption.
## Examples
- **Omeprazole** (brand name: **Prilosec**)
- PO on an empty stomach
- **Pantoprazole** (brand name: **Protonix**)
- PO or IVP 4mg/mL over at least 2 minutes
